Quantum Probability Theory

چکیده
The mathematics of classical probability theory was subsumed into classical measure theory by Kolmogorov in 1933. Quantum theory as nonclassical probability theory was incorporated into the beginnings of noncommutative measure theory by von Neumann in the early thirties, as well. To precisely this end, von Neumann initiated the study of what are now called von Neumann algebras and, with Murray, made a first classification of such algebras into three types. The nonrelativistic quantum theory of systems with finitely many degrees of freedom deals exclusively with type I algebras. However, for the description of further quantum systems, the other types of von Neumann algebras are indispensable. The paper reviews quantum probability theory in terms of general von Neumann algebras, stressing the similarity of the conceptual structure of classical and noncommutative probability theories and emphasizing the correspondence between the classical and quantum concepts, though also indicating the nonclassical nature of quantum probabilistic predictions. In addition, differences between the probability theories in the type I, II and III settings are explained. A brief description is given of quantum systems for which probability theory based on type I algebras is known to be insufficient. These illustrate the physical significance of the previously mentioned differences. ∗Work supported by the Hungarian Scientific Research Fund (OTKA); contract number: T 043642.

Acceptable random variables in non-commutative probability spaces
Acceptable random variables are defined in noncommutative (quantum) probability spaces and some of probability inequalities for these classes are obtained. These results are a generalization of negatively orthant dependent random variables in probability theory. Furthermore, the obtained results can be used for random matrices.
متن کاملQuantum Theory and Probability Theory: Their Relationship and Origin in Symmetry
Quantum theory is a probabilistic calculus that enables the calculation of the probabilities of the possible outcomes of a measurement performed on a physical system. But what is the relationship between this probabilistic calculus and probability theory itself? Is quantum theory compatible with probability theory? If so, does it extend or generalize probability theory? In this paper, we answer...
متن کاملQuantum Information Processing Theory
Definition Quantum information processing theory is an alternative mathematical approach for generating theories of how an observer processes information. Typically, quantum information processing models are derived from the axiomatic principles of quantum probability theory. This probability theory may be viewed as a generalization of classic probability. Quantum information processing models ...
متن کاملAn Outline of Quantum Mechanics
Quantum mechanics is, viewed purely as a mathematical theory, a generalisation of probability theory (a non-commutative probability theory). Application to a concrete problem however, reduces the theory to a probability theory in the classical sense [1, p. 280]. Quantum Mechanics thus (only) aspires to yield expectation values and probability distributions for the outcomes of statistical experi...
متن کاملA test of two models of probability judgment: quantum versus noisy probability
We test contrasting predictions of two recent models of probability judgment: the quantum probability model (Busemeyer et al., 2011) and the probability theory plus noise model (Costello and Watts, 2014). Both models assume that people estimate probability using formal processes that follow or subsume standard probability theory. The quantum probability model predicts people’s estimates should ...
